ifilm to the rescue

When youtube pulled this most excellent music video a few months ago, I was heartbroken. And also too damn lazy to see if it was up anywhere else. Here is the saga of John McClane. Too late to honor the first film's legacy as one of the finest Christmas movies ever made, but plenty relevant with the recent release of the Die Hard 4 trailer. Yippee ki-yay!

  • This continues to crack me up. I saw the first "Die Hard" in a theater on Red Square (Russian translation title "Hard Nut.") In the 80s/90s, the Soviets generally didn't use subtitles. Instead, they would have one guy with a cheap mic dub the whole movie by himself. It was horrible and funny and painful.

You could tell, too, he was interpreting and dubbing all at the same time, and when he got to "Yippee kai yay, MFer!" He didn't know what to do. My friend and I were laughing so hard, we yelled the whole line at the screen.

Keep in mind, we'd brought a six-pack of Pepsi and a bag of microwave popcorn with us, to share with people around us - the Russians had no idea what we'd said, but they were giggling like idiots, since they knew we were American and knew whatever was really being said.
